Branches and the river
The city chips branches at the curb on alternating Mondays: the east side of the river on the first and third Monday, the west side on the second and fourth, with no chipping in June and July. Branches need to be at least 4 feet long and no more than 6 inches across, with no root balls, and out by 7 a.m.
A storm that drops a whole tree, a lot being cleared for a garage, or root balls from pulled shrubs fall outside those limits. For those, a 20 yard container of yard waste alone, with no trash mixed in so it can go to composting, is the usual route.
The county center is in town
Kent County's North Kent Recycling & Waste Center is in Rockford. It takes tires, appliances, electronics, scrap metal, propane and other compressed gas tanks, and household chemicals through SafeChem. That makes it easy to keep those out of the dumpster on a Rockford cleanout.
